Music is a key part of worship at both our churches. We have fabulous organists who do wonders with our music to promote our worship.
St. Mary with All Souls
If you are a singer and would like to join our parish choir then please do be in touch ( For St. Mary’s contact email@example.com our Director of Music & Organist) – Alan would be delighted to hear from you. St Mary’s has a dedicated band of singers who sing every week (no auditions; no experience required!), rehearsing before the main Sunday service at around 9.30am & occasional Saturday mornings. There is also the Festival Choir which puts on our more spectacular musical events for high days and holidays & includes semi-professional singers (an ability to read music is an advantage but by no means essential. The Festival Choir rehearses when needed and performs about 6 times a year). You would be very welcome just to come along & introduce yourself after Sunday Mass or contact us for further details. The Choirs sing a wide range of music (all eras; all genres) and since we are not restricted to one hymn book (the Church has some rather spectacular technology that means we can project the words of hymns onto a glass screen for the congregation to see) we can mix and match styles and repertoire rather more than most Churches are able.If you have a choir yourself and are looking for a venue – make us an offer!
St. Mary’s has two pipe organs; a Victorian giant & a tracker organ (1966) in the west gallery both recently refurbished (a booklet describing them & their origins is available in the Church) and a fine grand piano. If you are in need of a practice instrument please contact us – but bear in mind these instruments are in great demand. If you are interested in helping with or learning the art of liturgical organ-playing or applying for our Organ Scholarship (Age 12-80+) – don’t hold back! Details are available on request or take a look at the pdf in the media section.
There are regular concerts in St Mary’s (watch out for our summer season of Sunday afternoon concerts featuring students of the Royal Academy) and if you would like more information then watch our Events section.
At St James we have a cantor who sings every week, to strengthen our singing and to sing an anthem during Communion. For major festivals we enjoy a very high standard of music from professional singers which adds a great deal to our worship.
